Because the melting of 1 kilogram of ice from -0 degree Celsius to +0 water requires the same as heating 1 litre of water from 0 to 80 degrees Celsius water. Even more water is absorbing 90% of the suns radiation instead of reflecting 90% as with ice and is a much better transporter of heat.

Nasa stelt dat aersolen (kleine deeltje vervuiling in de lucht) afnemen en daardoor een extra boost geven aan de klimaat opwarming .De bewustwording van de klimaatverstoring komt op het moment dat de effecten die de ramp verborgen hielden langzaam verdwijnen. Hierdoor verloopt de opwarming schijnbaar sneller dan dat men van broeikas gassen alleen zou verwachten. Daarnaast spelen andere zeer belangrijke factoren mee die de opwarming 3 * zo snel laten verlopen als voorspeld door het IPCC.
Nasa changing ice Sheets.heeft nieuwe technieken ontwikkeld om vanuit verschillende gezichtspunten het gedrag van de ijskappen te bestuderen, en concludeert dat de ijskap van Groenland veel harder smelt de laatste 10 jaar dan ze voor mogelijk hadden gehouden, tot voor 6 jaar waren zulke betrouwbare technieken niet voor handen.
